Description
Medela's breastfeeding and Lactation Symposium 2025 featured a world-class agenda for healthcare professionals enthusiastic to learn about the latest scientific evidence in the field of human milk and Lactation. Researchers, clinicians and parents representatives came together to share knowledge, inspire progress and translate science into practice to transform care for mothers, infants and families.
Join our international speakers in the second of our 2025 European symposium series sharing innovation, insight and inspiration in Optimizing Milk Supply for Mothers With Lactation Risk Factors. The lectures are followed by a question and answer discussion with the speakers and our hybrid audience.
This session includes talks from:
-
Prof. Donna Geddes and Dr. Stuart Prosser: Screening for Perinatal Lactation Risk Factors
-
Prof. Paula Meier: Understanding Secretory Activation and How It Informs Best Lactation Practice
-
Prof. Diane Spatz: Proactive Lactation Management in the First Few Days postpartum

Objectives
Upon completion of viewing the presentations you will be able to:
- Identify antenatal detectable lactation risk factors and describe their prevalence among pregnant women intending to breastfeed.
- Evaluate the impact of individual and combined metabolic or endocrine risk factors—such as elevated BMI, gestational diabetes, or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)—on early breastfeeding outcomes.
- Describe the benefits of systematic antenatal and perinatal lactation risk screening and outline how targeted counseling can proactively optimise breastfeeding success.
- Explain the physiology of secretory activation (lactogenesis II), including the transcellular and paracellular pathways involved and their hormonal regulation.
- Interpret key human milk biomarkers, particularly mothers' own milk sodium, and discuss their use in assessing secretory activation, coming to volume, and predicting NICU breastfeeding outcomes.
- Apply evidence‑based strategies—such as antenatal milk expression, pumping pathways and proactive postpartum lactation assessment—to support timely secretory activation and the development of a complete milk supply.
